Volunteering in the community

Young. Global. Active.

These words not only describe the theme of this year’s United Nations International Volunteer Day (IVD), but many of our members’ outlooks when it comes to dynamic and impactful community efforts.

In celebration of IVD, we at the National Mining Association are proud to highlight some of our member companies’ volunteer efforts.

The non-profit organization founded by Atlas Copco, Water for All, has provided clean drinking water to 1.5 million people around the world. Founded in 1984, it is driven by voluntary donations and boosted by the company. Atlas Copco employees also impact their local communities by participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, as well as encouraging individuals to make a difference in their communities.

Likewise, the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company’s volunteer program provides creative incentives that encourage community participation. Since 1998, their employees have donated over 35,000 hours of volunteer work to more than 50 community organizations.

Adding holiday spirit to volunteerism, Materion has taken their community involvement to another level. As a leader in community outreach, they partnered with Parker Hannifin, Ferrero, and Oswald Cos. to assemble bicycles for children in coordination with Toys for Tots.

Like minerals, charity is at the core of the American way of life. On this year’s International Volunteer Day, we applaud the mining industry’s community involvement and encourage and look forward to more to come.
