BMW and Ford, two of the world’s best known and largest automakers, have plans to expand and invest in manufacturing plants across South Carolina and Ohio, respectively. In March, BMW announced that it will increase production of its new luxury X7 sports car at a South Carolina manufacturing facility, potentially bringing $1 billion in additional investment to the state. Meanwhile, Ford will spend $500 million to update its Lima, Ohio plant to produce EcoBoost engines for the Ford F-150, North America’s best-selling vehicle.
A steady, reliable source of minerals is the key to a healthy domestic manufacturing industry, particularly the automobile industry, which uses a variety of minerals—including gold, magnesium, and copper—in every single car it produces.
