Mining Drives Diversification in the Energy Sector

Posted on October 31, 2014 by Minerals Make Life

As we near the end of Energy Action month in October, we want to recognize the importance of energy to our nation’s economy, national security and environmental well-being.  National Mining Association member companies are on the forefront of energy innovation. Without their mining initiatives and projects, many of the technologies that we depend on today would not exist.

While most people recognize that minerals and metals are used in the construction of roads and buildings, many are unaware that minerals are critical components in the manufacturing of new energy technologies, like solar and wind, as well as in hybrid car technologies. As these energy sources and related technologies continue to play an important role in our energy mix, the demand for the minerals they are made from will also rise. From copper and nickel used in solar cells and wind turbines to cobalt and lithium used in hybrid vehicles, minerals are nothing short of essential to America’s energy mix.

In order for America to secure an “all of the above” energy policy, we must invest in mining to establish reliable domestic supplies of the minerals that drive diversification in the energy sector. However, a new streamlined permitting policy is needed. Currently, the mining permitting process can take up to 10 years in the United States. An updated and timely U.S. minerals mining policy would establish a stable supply of domestically mined minerals that would grow our economy and safeguard national security, all while upholding rigorous environmental standards.
