Katie Sweeney on fuel-efficient summer driving

Posted on August 07, 2013 by Minerals Make Life

In a consumer radio feature, Katie Sweeney, NMA’s senior vice president and general counsel, shared her views on the importance of minerals for fuel-efficient summer driving. As the host Bob Tebo notes, “With more cars on the road, it’s imperative that we find ways to reduce emissions.”

From the mirrors and paint to the body frame and engine, mined minerals are integral to every vehicle on the road. Gold, platinum and aluminum are just a few of the minerals used by auto manufacturers. Here’s what Katie had to say:

“Metals and minerals are key components in next generation vehicles. Minerals are critical to engine components such as catalytic converters that help reduce emissions and for the design of lighter vehicle frames that contribute to fuel efficiency. In fact, every 10 percent reduction in a vehicle’s weight translates to a 6-7 percent improvement in fuel economy, meaning less fuel consumption and lower emissions.”
