Leo Hindery Jr., chair of the U.S. Economy/Smart Globalization Initiative at the New America Foundation, discussed the effects of China's raw material export policies on the U.S. auto parts industry. He cited President Obama’s recent announcement of the World Trade Organization case against Chinese rare earth mineral export restrictions as evidence that China’s strategically implemented policies give a leg up to the country’s domestic industries.
What Hindery should have noted is that there are more than 13 million tons of rare earth reserves within U.S. borders that can help meet manufacturers’ needs.
