Chinese exports of much-needed rare earths decrease

Between January and September of this year, China's rare earth exports were down 65 percent and reflected just 40 percent of the country’s total export quota for 2011.

China is responsible for 95 percent of world production of rare earths, and has recently been accused of unfairly reducing global supplies and driving up prices for the materials. Some analysts say China’s rare earth policies have been designed to encourage foreign consumers to relocate to China.
