On May 10, the Alaska Miners Association celebrated the first annual Alaska Mining Day, after being officially signed into law last month.
“It’s commemorative — a day where we can recognize the mining industry in Alaska,” said Deantha Crockett, executive director of the Alaska Miners Association. “It’s a way for us to reflect on what the mining industry has done and continues to do.”
In 2010, the mining sector employed 9,480 in the state and in 2011 the state contributed nearly $3.8 billion in mineral production.
“Mining has created opportunities for Alaskan families for generations,” Governor Parnell said on the day of the signing. “I am honored to sign this legislation to recognize the miners and the mining industry, which have greatly contributed to our state’s economy, and will continue to do so in the future.”
