NMA Newsmakers: Steve Wunning on Mining’s Sustainable Future

Posted on February 27, 2015 by Minerals Make Life

In the latest “NMA Newsmakers,” National Mining Association’s Jamie Caswell sits down with Steve Wunning, Group President of Caterpillar, to discuss the importance of Caterpillar’s machinery to mining processes and the future of a sustainable mining sector.

“The long-term future of mining is very positive. Mining production is up this year and consumption for most commodities around the world is also up, so that’s a good sign,” Wunning states. He outlines three major factors that contribute to a global growth in the energy sector: population growth, more people living in cities and a global increase in the standard of living. As Wunning points out, each of these factors creates a greater demand for energy to build and power hospitals, airports, bridges, schools, etc. Without an ample and stable supply of the key raw minerals, these large-scale projects that are necessary for our future would not come to pass.

As mining continues to grow, Wunning emphasizes the importance of a sustainable future that involves both energy development and environmental responsibility. And when it comes to mining, nothing is more important than being a good neighbor and environmental steward. In fact, U.S. mining invests heavily in the research and development of new technologies and processes to minimize environmental impact, part of what makes the U.S. one of the most environmentally conscious places in the world for mining.

As Wunning states, “It takes people working together with an open mind and collaborating with a common mission for businesses, the government and our environment” to encourage energy and mining success, all without compromising our environment.
