Metal Miner, a trade resource for global metals markets, issued a recent commentary on Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-Alaska) “American Mineral Security Act of 2015,” saying the bill would be a “sweeping reform of the several hurdles that face domestic miners” and is a “common-sense call to action” that would improve the U.S. mining industry.

The “American Mineral Security Act” plans to modernize the U.S.’ inefficient mine permitting policy. Currently, lengthy permitting delays hurt U.S. manufacturing and ultimately hinders our economic growth and forfeits thousands of American jobs. The bill aims to reduce inefficiencies in the process of opening new mines to help secure the critical minerals needed to support the American economy. Overall, the legislation aims to reduce our growing dependence on imported minerals. The National Mining Association (NMA) supports Sen. Murkowski’s efforts, noting, “The legislation helps reduce the inefficiencies of our underperforming permitting system by incorporating best practices for improving coordination among state and federal agencies.”

Minerals and metals mining is the foundation of U.S. manufacturing and is imperative to our nation’s economic recovery, national security and technological innovation. By supporting Sen. Murkowski’s legislation, the U.S. will be able to benefit from a more secure and reliable mineral supply chain and a stronger economy.
